Digital Signage Enhances Operations and Experience at St. Johann Hospital
District Hospital St. Johann in Tirol, Austria, has upgraded its communications infrastructure with a comprehensive digital signage solution developed by ZetaDisplay. The project supports the hospital’s commitment to operational efficiency, patient safety, and a modern healthcare environment by improving wayfinding and patient information delivery.

Challenges
Over time, the hospital’s physical expansion led to a fragmented and often confusing signage system. As departments were added, static signs became less effective, particularly given that not all departments are open throughout the day. Visitors and patients frequently encountered difficulties navigating the facility.
Additionally, patient information outside individual rooms was managed manually with paper notices, which needed to be updated daily. In areas such as the special care unit, where patients from various departments are treated, this manual system was particularly time-consuming and prone to error.
“We needed a more efficient and professional solution that reflected the standard of care we aim to deliver,” said Administrative Director Christoph Pfluger.
Solutions

Patient Information Displays
To address the need for clear and flexible communication, ZetaDisplay installed 28 x 24-inch displays outside patient rooms in the new upper floor of the B-wing. These displays show room numbers, department assignments, staff information, scheduled notes like “Nil by mouth” or warnings like “Infectious patient – Wear protective equipment”. The system also includes a calendar function for planning and updates.
Feedback from staff has been positive, highlighting improvements in workflow and patient engagement.

The ability to display welcome messages and patient-specific notes has been especially well received.

Wayfinding System
A digital wayfinding solution was also implemented across the B-wing. It includes a mix of 75-inch, 55-inch, and 43-inch screens, scaled according to location and content volume. These displays provide directional information and department listings and are automatically updated based on operational hours and events.
The system can be switched to emergency mode via an app, guiding both patients and emergency personnel to exits. This improves safety and emergency readiness.

Welcome Screen
An 86-inch display was installed in the hospital’s main entrance. It presents visitors with key information and announcements, helping to create a welcoming and informative environment from the start of their visit.
Benefits
The digital signage network has simplified navigation and information sharing throughout the hospital. It reduces manual work for staff and ensures patients and visitors receive accurate and timely guidance. The new system supports better communication, enhances the visitor experience, and reflects the hospital’s broader digital strategy.
Next Steps
Following the successful implementation in the B-wing, the hospital plans to extend the wayfinding system to Wing A by the end of 2025. Additional digital signage will be added outside the facility, including two totems that will provide directions from nearby public transport, the nursing school, and the town centre.
District Hospital St. Johann continues to build on its early leadership in digital healthcare infrastructure, using digital signage to support both operational goals and the needs of its patients and staff.
